Kenney reimposes COVID restrictions, forced-masking

Kenney backtracked on his promise that Alberta was “open for good”, reimposing forced-masking and banning liquor sales after 10:00 pm.

EDMONTON, AB: Alberta Premier Jason Kenney went back on his promise that Alberta was “open for good” today with the reimposition of several COVID-19 restrictions.

The premier gave his first media availability since the beginning of the federal election, using his time at the podium to encourage Albertans to get vaccinated, but left it to Health Minister Tyler Shandro to announce the return of restrictions.

“We need to bring back measures that we know have worked in the past,” said Shandro.

He said this will include forced-masking in all indoor public and workplaces, and a prohibition on alcohol sales after 10:00 pm.

Data was not provided as to how alcohol sales after 10:00 pm increase the transmission of the virus.

The government also recommend that employers delay the return of staff to the workplace, and that unvaccinated Albertans do not have indoor social gatherings.

The move comes as an about-face by Kenney and the UCP government, which pledged that the lifting of restrictions on July 1 was permanent and would not return.

“This is an important milestone and a great achievement, but we will not stop here,” said Kenney at the time. “We will keep administering first and second doses [of vaccines] as quickly as possible so we’re not just open for summer, but open for good.” [Emphasis added]

But yesterday, multiple sources inside Alberta’s UCP Caucus told the Western Standard that it was meeting to discuss the reintroduction of COVID-19 restrictions.

The two MLAs that spoke with the Western Standard on condition of anonymity said that the Priorities & Implementation Cabinet Committee (PICC) met August 1 to discuss potential measures to combat rising COVID-19 cases.

According to one of the sources, Health Minister Tyler Shandro presented PICC with three options: maintain Alberta’s reopening plan with no restrictions, reimplement forced-masking mandates with voluntary social gathering restrictions, and reimplement forced-masking mandates with mandatory social gathering restrictions.

Both MLAs told the Western Standard that PICC was sharply divided on the path forward and decided to put the matter to the government caucus at a meeting September 2 between 10:00 am MST and 1:00 pm MST.

The caucus meeting ended indecisively, with sharp disagreement on the potential return of restrictions, with the final decision to be left to the PICC.

Kenney thanked the 2.9 million or 70% of Albertans who are now double-vaccinated, but said that the rise of COVID-19 cases was due to the remaining 30% who have yet to be vaccinated. He said that 80% of current COVID-19 patients are not yet vaccinated.

He said that most COVID-19 patients in intensive care, the overwhelming majority are unvaccinated.

“Their choices are not jeopardizing our healthcare system…This is now a crisis of the unvaccinated.

Kenney said that to encourage vaccine uptake, the province would now pay Albertans $100 to get the jab.

“You are putting yourself at risk. You are putting our healthcare system at risk…Your personal choice has very real world consequences…For the love of God, get vaccinated now. And if you do, we will pay you $100.”

On the same day as the UCP Caucus met to discuss the return of restrictions, NDP Opposition Leader Rachel Notley called on the UCP government to introduce mandatory vaccine passports and forced-masking for Albertans.

In a news release September 2, Notley said that a vaccine passport system and forced-masking was required to “protect people, protect hospitals and protect the provincial economy.”

“Alberta’s NDP is calling for the introduction of simple, secure and scannable vaccine passports that would be required for entry to non-essential busses and mass gathering settings across the province.”

“The passport would feature a QR code – unique to each Albertan – that can be easily scannable at airports, sporting arenas concert venues, businesses and other settings to provide required proof of vaccination.”

Notley said that her party’s proposal would be similar to that in Ontario, which bars people from entering many establishments – public and private – without first providing a government-issued vaccine passport.

Kenney and his government have been adamant that they will not impose vaccine passports however.

“We’ve been very clear from the beginning that we will not facilitate or accept vaccine passports,” Kenney told reporters at his annual Calgary Stampede pancake breakfast.

Airdrie-East UCP MLA Angela Pitt went so far as to say that she would put forward legislation barring discrimination against those who have not been vaccinated.

In an email to a constituent in August, the MLA wrote, “I have proposed that we put forth legislation that prohibits discrimination based on private, personal health records.”

The NDP’s proposal also called for forced-masking in “essential settings, such as grocery stores”.

Ho is there possibly more ‘unvaccinated’ people spreading this now in 2021, than this time last year when NO ONE was vaccinated? THINK.

Why do people make elections so difficult? Elections are simple.
    • The last person you voted for.
    • Are the running again?
    • Did they make promises?
    • Were any of the promises kept?
    • Vote accordingly.
No one should get a second chance, after failing to deliver a single thing, the first time.
    Balanced budget?
Any actual opposition, to anything? Or just press releases?
    Did a pipeline get built?
Did anyone go to jail for that rail blockade?
But, they did arrest that pastor on the highway!
Did they get you get your guns back in High River?
    Has equalization changed?

I don’t answer to politicians, they answer to me. They will never achieve their 90% compliance and they know it. There isn’t anything they can offer me to inject myself with unknown substances. In fact, I think we should seriously consider crowd funding a good criminal lawyer, perhaps Jonathan Denis, to obtain a court order to get these vials and have them examined by independent scientists.

If you want to convince someone like me to take it, I want to know what’s in it first.

Chronically ill and those with little time left who can’t tolerate the jab and are the 80% in hospital. Kenney should go hand them $100 and lecture them for being too sick to get it. Leave the healthy alone.

In an open letter, 450 AB Emerg doctors, called out AHS CEO Verna Yiu and AHS leaders for spreading falsehoods regarding the bed and staff shortages.

ER docs say that the because of the imposed fear, onerous covid pressure on staff (PPE, isolating many), the refusal of family docs to see their patients are the reasons for a back log of severe illness coming into the ER’s and staff shortages.

Just in case anyone forgot, the “open for good” is a reminder that Jason Kenny is back on form saying one thing and mandating the opposite. No vaccine passports in Alberta? Does that mean Alberta vaccine passports by Christmas or Thanksgiving?

The government and the MSM keep on lying to us. Whistleblowers in the healthcare system are telling us that it’s the vaxxed that are in the hospitals. I knew the unvaxxed would get blamed for the 4th wave. I think most of the health issues are a result of the jab as healthcare workers are seeing a range of neurological, nervous system and heart issues immediately after to 3 months after the jab. Yesterday a friend here in Alberta said he knows 3 teenagers in his son’s circle that now have myocarditis after getting jabbed.
I have heard several times from different sources 95% of the hospitalizations are vaxxed. One nurse said that in the last couple months she hasn’t seen anyone unvaxxed with Covid.
These reports are confirmation to what is actually happening and it is being suppressed. Israel has done a few studies and don’t think for a moment our government doesn’t know about these issues. We have criminals running our province and our country!

War room launches American offensive

The approximately $240,000 initiative is “a reminder to Americans that their friends and allies in Canada hold solutions to cleaner energy and lower gas prices – and the key to a strong post-pandemic economic recovery.”

Alberta’s energy war room kicked of a quarter-million-dollar campaign to sell Americans on Canada’s oil.

As first reported in the Western Standard, the campaign kicked off with billboards in Times Square in New York City and Washinton, DC.

The campaign by the Canadian Energy Centre asks Americans to choose Canadian oil imports first for solutions to cleaner energy production and a break from rising prices at the pumps.

The US uses approximately nine million barrels of oil per day beyond what is produced domestically.

The approximately $240,000 initiative is “a reminder to Americans that their friends and allies in Canada hold solutions to cleaner energy and lower gas prices — and the key to a strong post-pandemic economic recovery.”

The outdoor and online campaign will direct people to information about Canada’s responsible energy development at www.friendlyenergy.com

The campaign will also feature a grassroots component that calls on Canadians and Americans to respectfully advocate to the president and U.S. lawmakers about the benefits of Canadian energy.

“We want to give our American friends the information they need to urge their leaders to look to safe, responsible and increasingly less intensive crude from Canada that U.S. refiners need and that will help keep gas prices down,” said Canadian Energy Centre CEO Tom Olsen.

“We are speaking out for the many Canadians and Americans dismayed that the U.S. government asked OPEC+ countries for more oil to curb rising gas prices, rather than working with Canada.”

Olsen pointed out the U.S. government closed the door on the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have been the first pipeline operated at net-zero emissions and eventually powered by renewable energy resources.

“While Keystone XL’s fate has been decided for now, there remains urgency in letting Americans know any further threatened sanctions in the U.S. on pipelines by state governments and activist-led court challenges will be detrimental to American families, struggling to get back on their feet from the economic impacts of COVID-19,” he said.

Of the top 10 countries from which the U.S. imported oil in June 2021, three were designated Not Free (Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iraq) and three were designated as Partly Free (Mexico, Nigeria and Colombia).

Specifics for the billboard advertising include:

  • Two digital billboards in Times Square for a four-week period and online display campaign promoting Canada as the responsible and reliable energy provider for the U.S.
  • A static digital billboard, located in Astor on New York’s Grand Central Parkway, for a two-week period targeting traffic heading to LaGuardia Airport, the Mets Citi Field Stadium and a “chokepoint” for traffic to Queens.
  • Three full-motion digital billboards for a two-week period on the exterior of the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., home of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NCAA’s Georgetown Hoyas.

Farkas pledges to freeze taxes for four years

Farkas said every year Calgarians are told they have to accept increased taxes or face cuts to services.

Calgary mayoral candidate Jeromy Farkas released the first plank of his platform Monday, pledging to freeze taxes for four years.

“Over the past 10 years, Calgarians have struggled with lack of opportunity. We’ve witnessed the economy crumble, the tax burden increase, and the city hall establishment become increasingly out of touch. It’s time for that to change,” said Farkas in a release.

“If elected as mayor, I will champion a four-year property tax freeze for homes and businesses. Now more than ever, Calgarians need a strong and growing economy. This four-year tax freeze will throw a lifeline to struggling families, seniors, and small business owners, and give them the certainty that they need to get back on their feet.”

Farkas said economist Jack Mintz reviewed the promise and found it to be an achievable goal, with the millions the city has stashed aside in various reserve funds.

“Implementing a four-year residential and non-residential tax freeze is undoubtedly achievable,” said Mintz,

“The best part is this plan can be implemented without reductions to city services given the excess reserves available and reasonable growth forecasts.”

Farkas said every year Calgarians are told they have to accept increased taxes or face cuts to services.

“It’s time to put this false choice to rest with common-sense financial management,” said the Farkas campaign, adding the tax bill for the typical home has doubled over the last decade while basic city services have remained stagnant or even declined.

“This election is about change versus more of the same. As councillor, I’ve consistently opposed needless budget increases. I have a record of following through on my promises. Change starts now, with a four-year tax freeze,” Farkas said.

Calgarians go to the polls October 18.

Poll shows Canadians trust the Internet and know what’s fake news

Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault’s department has proposed “concrete action” to police news and information on the internet.

Despite Liberal attempts to censor the Internet, the vast majority of Canadians think online information is reliable and people can tell when its not, says the feds own internal polling.

Blacklock’s Reporter said Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault’s department has proposed “concrete action” to police news and information on the Internet.

“A majority, 80%, believe the online content they consume is factual and truthful,” said a pollsters’ report.

“Two-thirds of Canadians, 66%, feel confident in their ability to tell if online content is fair and balanced.”

The Heritage department paid Ipsos Public Affairs $164,621 to conduct online focus groups and questionnaires with 5,207 people.

“Almost all Canadians are frequently consuming some form of information online,” wrote researchers.

“Canadians largely believe having access to different sources of information with different points of view is important for people to participate in a democracy.

“Most participants were confident in their abilities to consider various sources and ensure they are being presented with ‘the full picture.’”

Guilbeault last July 2 issued a report to instruct the media on how to report the news.

“We can no longer ignore the challenges and opportunities that come with an increasingly digital world,” said Guilbeault.

“We have to act now to ensure a healthy ecosystem online for all citizens.”

Reporters, editors and commentators must “foster greater exposure to diverse cultural content, information and news” and “contribute to a healthier public discourse, greater social inclusion within society, bolster resilience to disinformation and misinformation and increase our citizens’ ability to participate in democratic processes,” said the report.

The guide defined misinformation as “false or misleading content shared without harmful intent though the effects can still be harmful, e.g. when people share false information with friends and family in good faith.”

The document doesn’t say who within the Heritage department would monitor news deemed to be harmful.

“Ethical journalistic standards should be upheld and encouraged,” said the guide, adding: “Information about media ownership and funding sources should be made accessible to the public and transparent to safeguard a diverse and pluralistic media ecosystem.”
