WATCH: The battle for Banff-Airdrie

“Alberta has had enough of Ottawa” – Nadine Wellwood.

There is a battle brewing in the Riding of Banff-Airdrie. Former Conservative Party of Canada leadership hopeful Derek Sloan has parachuted into the rural Alberta riding from his home riding of Hastings—Lennox and Addington in Ontario, where his wife, Jennifer Sloan, is running as an independent. Sloan is taking aim at unseating the Tories whip Blake Richards. Richards was first elected in 2008 and was last re-elected for a fourth time in the riding of Banff-Airdrie on October 21, 2019.

Nadine Wellwood, candidate for the People’s Party of Canada spoke with the Western Standard’s James Finkbeiner after Sloan’s announcement on August 19, 2021. Watch below as James asks both Derek and Nadine about their bid for MP.

I was thinking Maverick….but that new hat candidate is from way out east, guess there’s no multi generational Albertan at heart candidates running to look out for Alberta…mp richards record hasn’t meant much after all these years, he looks forward to returning to his Ottawa home and friends

I agree the comments below. If he had moved his family here it would be understandable. Even then you have to be leery of a person who moves to a province just to run in politics (eg. Jason Kenney). Then I read he is not even moving his family here and that his wife is running in his Ontario riding. Vote PPC.

I think and pray you are wrong about Trudeau getting in. We will lose our firearms if Trudeau does win, even with a minority. Wake up gun owners. We are electing a Prime Minister not a local candidate.

Excellent! Very pleased that Derek is lending himself to some PPC use. A high-risk/reward “Suicide-Squeeze” play (to use baseball analogy) on the CPC aimed at Richards with Wellwood “on 3rd” and Sloan at Bunt.

Should be a good message to Erin et Crew id sucessful. I predict a tight “Conservative” split between Wellwood/Sloan and Richards. And it might just break her way.

p.s Former Elections shows about 25k Civil Servants in riding who split the left between Libs-NDP-Greens. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banff%E2%80%94Airdrie

I like what Sloan stands for but could never vote for an out of province candidate.

People typically don’t take kindly to parachuting politicians looking for political gain. If Sloan is serious, he will move his family here and live as Albertans. He would certainly gain more credibility.

To stop this candidate parachute crap from happening at election time. Elections Canada should instate a requirement the candidate has to reside in the Electoral District for six months prior to the candidate being allegeable to be on the ballot.

If Elections Alberta had the same candidate requirement of six months residency in the Electoral District a candidate was wanting to run in. We wouldn’t have Jason Kenney as Premier. Brian Jean would be Premier & probably doing a hell of a better job.

Jim Prentice parachuted in from Ottawa to save Alberta. How did that go?
Jason Kenney parachuted in from Ottawa to save Alberta. How is that going?
Derek Sloan parachutes in from pumphandle Ontario to save Alberta. What could go wrong?

Why is this media outlet even giving this guy space?

No Media Bailouts

The fourth estate is critical to a functioning democracy in holding the government to account. An objective media can't maintain editorial integrity when it accepts money from a government we expect it to be critical of.
