A female moose calf is alive today after being pulled from the swift-moving waters of the Sheep River by two Calgary kayakers.

Professional kayaker Benny Clark and Calgary firefighter Scott Linton were recently on the waters of the Sheep River, south of the city, when they spotted something on the shale.

“Benny says, ‘Moose,’ and I didn’t see it (at first)… and we startled her, and she got up and fell into the river,” Linton told Global News.

The pair didn’t hesitate and quickly ditched their boats to try and rescue the female calf.

With a rope being held by Linton, Clark waded through the waist-deep rushing water. He was able to corral the little thing and bring her to shore, as her mother bleated in the background.

“I wasn’t worried about the river. I was basically (thinking) just like how heavy is this moose… If you branded a two-month-old calf and lifted it up, that was basically the weight of it,” Linton told Global.

After checking the moose for injuries and giving it a warm-up hug, the moose was last seen walking towards the trees.

No Media Bailouts

The fourth estate is critical to a functioning democracy in holding the government to account. An objective media can't maintain editorial integrity when it accepts money from a government we expect it to be critical of.

We the undersigned call on the Canadian government to immediately cease all payouts to media companies.
