LETTER: Mavericks leaving some out of conservative umbrella

RE: Maverick party releases its election platform

As a supporter of the Mavericks, I have been eagerly awaiting their platform. While their very broad and extensive economic platform is a breath of fresh air, their social policies are not.

A party that, at its core, is supposed to be about providing a voice to the West, needs to embrace all Western ideals, including pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values.

One can argue the party should not take sides, but that defeats the purpose of being a voice for the West. However, the platform not only does not embrace social conservativism, but it actively bars social conservatives from expressing a voice, or introducing legislation to support traditional marriage or restrict abortion.

We don’t need another party telling the West what it should think or feel or believe, and we don’t need yet another top-down party. The Mavericks have not shown either the temerity or the confidence to embrace the values necessary for sustained electoral success.

I wanted to vote for them, but unless they permit MPs to have a voice in Ottawa, it’s a hard pass for me.

The Maverick party missis it on this point. Every leftist party is quick to define and fight for it’s moral (or immoral) values. There is no such thing as being neutral. This has been the failure of Conservative parties in the past. President Trump sure wasn’t afraid to make a strong pro life stand and became all the more popular for it regardless of media hatred.

Yes, Sean, you are right: Maverick party is build around one simple idea of the western autonomy/independence. And this simplicity makes that idea feasible – the more people it will unite the better chances it has. And finally, do you think your political views can change anything until the East dictates you what to do anyway?

The writer says “The platform not only does not embrace social conservativism” “pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values”

Definition: social conservatism, rose in the early 1800’s & usually refers to a political ideology that involves traditional, historical views on the definition of marriage, life, sexuality, and religion.

I’d say to writer and Mr. M. You are pushing a very strict ideology on many who don’t hold those Christian traditional values from the 1800’s. I agree those who have these values should be heard, but others who do not hold those values should not be imposed upon to accept your values as Maverick values.

Your right to take your vote elsewhere is what a citizen in a free democracy is free to do.

I do not feel the Maverick Party should be forced to embrace a strict religious ideology & this is what you are pushing.

The political reality in 2021 is very different. The path that you travel in your religious life is very narrow path. However, that is your path were many will take the wide path. Maverick, in my opinion, has to be open to all who want change for Western Canada.

If the writer of the article and Mr. M. want change in Western Canada, then take out a membership to Maverick and get involved & support change in Western Canada.

RE: Wall says Calgary oil firms should seek greener pastures

Newly elected mayor of Calgary, Jyoti Gondek’s rush to declare a ‘climate emergency’ will keep her on the front pages, but it comes with a nasty price tag.

LETTER: Praise for WS work on Spitzer tragedy

“I’m so tired of all the clickbait headlines. The trashy stories.”

RE: FILDEBRANDT: Alberta’s government lied about the death of young teen Nathanael Spitzer, and the media buried it

Thank you for your well-written article about Nathaneal Spitzer.

I’m so tired of all the clickbait headlines. The trashy stories. The articles written about things that don’t matter. The news forced on readers by those with a bigger/hidden agenda.

In the midst of a tragic time, when there is so much fear and anger swirling around, I’m very thankful to be reminded that there are writers like you that still care and want to fight for truth.

Thank you.

LETTER: Kenney shouldn’t be given any slack at all

He is the worst example I have seen as a failed politician that I have seen in my seventy years.

RE: MAKICHUK: It’s time we cut Premier Kenney some slack

I have watched politics all my life and have never seen as an inept performance as Jason Kenny has put on.

He came to Alberta as our conservative saviour. He took over a party with a message that represented a lot of people’s views especially in rural Alberta and then proceeded to ignore the fundamentals of that platform.

Issues such as the Crownest debate on rail movement of grain where Western producers actually were thrown in jail for carrying a bucket full of grain across the Montana border have brought distrust. Trudeau has destroyed in many us the desire to be a part of this joke called Canada.

Kenny apparently was the man to bring these and many more issues to the Canadian public and demand change. In spite of many letters to him to encourage him to do something he has tucked his tail between his legs and completely dropped the ball.

If you are a conservative voter as I am, trying to find any reflection of a conservative values in his policy is hard to do. To those of us who committed time and money to the Wildrose Party much of what he has portrayed is a slap in the face. His treatment of many people during this so-called pandemic is not in the interests of those of us that believe in democracy.

He is the worst example I have seen as a failed politician that I have seen in my seventy years. What a disaster he has been and as far as cutting him slack forget it. He had a clear mandate when he took on his role from the people who put him there. Your wanting to cut him slack is an insult to the Wildrose base who put this incompetent fool in and were betrayed.

No Media Bailouts

The fourth estate is critical to a functioning democracy in holding the government to account. An objective media can't maintain editorial integrity when it accepts money from a government we expect it to be critical of.

We the undersigned call on the Canadian government to immediately cease all payouts to media companies.
