LETTER: Western Standard shouldn’t back rogue rodeo

A reader takes issue with the Western Standard advertising an unauthorized rodeo.

RE: Alberta Rancher to hold an ‘End the Lockdowns Rodeo’

On behalf of the live events industry, and the venues that host them, with a pre-pandemic workforce of over 50,000, we ask that you reconsider your support for the upcoming rodeo, with spectators, planned as a lockdown protest, on May 1 and 2 in Bowden, AB. I am not writing to disagree with your opinion on ending Alberta’s restrictions on movement and gathering, I am writing to disagree with your timing and your motivation. Civil disobedience and editorial fueling of the flames when our (collected) industry is 5-7 weeks from events that will employ 1000’s is grandstanding at best and destructive at worst.

Underlying my opinion is a clear motivation by the Western Standard to derive revenue from ticket and advertising sales (as evident from your website). Is this the action of a publication whose motivation is to re-open the live events industry towards re-employment of 1000’s or simply a motivation for your Publication?

Quoting Homer Simpson ““It takes two to lie; one to lie, and one to listen.” Please stop the lie of genuinely speaking for a harmed industry, as people are listening.

EDITORS RESPONSE: The Western Standard does not receive any ticket revenue from the ‘No More Lockdowns Rodeo’, and we stand by our editorial decision to support the peaceful gathering of people who do not support lockdowns.

Letters to the Editor of the Western Standard are posted under this account. Letters do not necessarily reflect the editorial position of the Western Standard or its columnists.

Disobedience to tyrants is obedience to GOD!

Is the today’s society the one you really like or dreamed about it? Democracy means something but it is applied conveniently, based on who’s holding the power, therefore there’s no democracy – only you thing there is one.

Democracy has led to cracks in God’s precise ruling laws. Think hard of this.

    I repeat:

    United Kingdom banned rodeos . . .
but they allow 1000s of stabbings on the streets of London every year.

Did it ever occur to your anti-rodeo radicals that the animals might be having fun too?
Did you ever listen to the Broncs in the pen after the Rodeo laughing about all the dumb Cowboys they bounced off?

What’s next to attack, Football, kids Playgrounds, or MMA?

I am glad the Western Standard was there to record the event. Loved watching it on live stream.

I think having the Western standard at the event might of kept the RCMP & AHS quarantined from the event. I am wondering today, on 9 May 2021, if the Western Standard had been in Mirror, Alberta to record & live stream, if the RCMP & AHS would have been so brave in their arresting of the whistle stop cafe owner?

Off topic: It would have been very interesting for the Western Standard to get live feed of prisoner buses & armored police vehicles plus (riot police – maybe) waiting for the go ahead.

I am guessing the RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki & Premier Kenney plus AHS, wouldn’t have liked the optics on that kind of coverage.

What makes you think 5-7 weeks and we can get our lives back. Kenney has done nothing but change the goal posts and back peddle anytime we get close to whatever current metric he has put in place to reduce restrictions. 14 months of lying, what makes you think this time it will happen? Truth is rodeo events have been going for the last year with no problems throughout the US. Time for Albertans to take back our lives!

Zia needs to lighten up . . . and get the Facts straight!

Today in Florida you can go to Disneyland . . . in Alabama last Sunday they had a substantial crowd at Taladega Speedway.

Somehow an outdoor Rodeo in May in Alberta is dangerous? Lunacy man . . . .

States that Eliminated the insane Mask Mandates saw their “Cases” disappear . . . of course that likely corresponded with lowering the 35 Revolutions on the fake PCR Test.

We have know since last May that the under 60b crowd was over 99% LIKELY to Recover . . . Under 18 99.998% . . . Long past time to get back to normal.

Everything Govts have done is the Opposite of Science.
Lockdowns create more Lockdowns . . . why? Because almost ALL transmission occurred INDOORS . . . and the average age of the deceased was over 70 and mostly those with co-morbidities. Yet the Govt did little for Seniors’ Homes and those with Health Issues.

Regardless of your position on lockdown, tormenting animals for “fun” in the rodeo is condemned by anyone with a conscience.

As long as people submit to the restrictions being imposed by governments they will never be able to get back to their normal lives. There is no scientific proof or research to support lockdowns. As a matter of fact there is more proof that targeted isolation of those who are vulnerable prevents economic harm and the many mental and physical harms to people of all ages, especially children. Proof is shown from Sweden, Florida and other countries and states that did not lockdown. If one simply looks at the big picture they could see a picture emerge. A very horrific picture that shows the global links to implementation of the New World Order which is just another term for global socialism. If anyone still doubts that then answer the question “Why are any opinions other than the left being censored?”

Please, I implore you stop end these barbaric, cruel, inhumane events. The animals are terrified and do not deserve to be abused like this. They do not CHOOSE to be a participant and must go against their will. They want to be with their kind in a safe place just like we humans do. You would not allow any of this to happen to your pet dog. These animals are young and scared. Teaching our children that is OK to harm animals for entertainment and MONEY is wrong. Teach your children compassion, not how to harm animals. England and Scotland abandoned these cruel events in 1937. Wake up Americans, and teach kindness, not cruelty.

When will so-called grownups ever stop harassing animals for kicks in the name of rodeo ‘tradition’? Let’s just call it what it is: animal abuse. Nothing ‘traditional’ about it. Working ranches don’t hassle their animals the way rodeo does. Grow up, buckaroos.

Rodeo has had its day, and now belongs in the dustbin of history.

Be aware that EVERY animal welfare organization in North America condemns
rodeo due to its inherent cruelty. Animal injuries and deaths are
commonplace, veterinary care rare. The PRCA has required on-site vets only
since 1996, after FIVE animals were killed at the 1995 California Rodeo in

Most of rodeo is bogus from the git-go. REAL working cowboys/girls never
routinely rode bulls, or wrestled steers, or rode bareback, or barrel
raced, or practiced calf roping as a timed event. And they certainly did
not put flank straps on the animals, or work them over with painful
“hotshots,” kicks and slaps in the holding chutes. Some “sport”! Indeed,
rodeo is not a “sport” at all. It’s a macho exercise in domination.

The United Kingdom banned rodeos back in 1934. Can the U.S. be far behind?
Lest we forget, COVID-19 was HUMAN-caused, a direct result of our gross
mistreatment and abuse of animals, both wild and domestic. There are
connections to be made here, folks. Are we up to the task?

LETTER: Mavericks leaving some out of conservative umbrella

A party that, at its core, is supposed to be about providing a voice to the West, needs to embrace all Western ideals, including pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values.

RE: Maverick party releases its election platform

As a supporter of the Mavericks, I have been eagerly awaiting their platform. While their very broad and extensive economic platform is a breath of fresh air, their social policies are not.

A party that, at its core, is supposed to be about providing a voice to the West, needs to embrace all Western ideals, including pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values.

One can argue the party should not take sides, but that defeats the purpose of being a voice for the West. However, the platform not only does not embrace social conservativism, but it actively bars social conservatives from expressing a voice, or introducing legislation to support traditional marriage or restrict abortion.

We don’t need another party telling the West what it should think or feel or believe, and we don’t need yet another top-down party. The Mavericks have not shown either the temerity or the confidence to embrace the values necessary for sustained electoral success.

I wanted to vote for them, but unless they permit MPs to have a voice in Ottawa, it’s a hard pass for me.

LETTER: Mike Nickel gets down to the brass tax for Edmonton

“No manager ever cleared your streets of snow or fixed your sidewalk.”

In October, Edmontonians will choose a new mayor. There are 10 candidates now. Most names are unknown to me. Three that aren’t, are Michael Oshry, Amarjeet Sohi and Mike Nickel.

I listened to Oshry’s announcement and his answer to why he was running. I didn’t hear a response that really answered the question. He is running because he has a business background and has been on council for four years. Not good enough for me to vote for him

Amarjeet Sohi was on council for 12 years. I can’t support a civic politician who abandoned the city and now wants to return to the civic fold. We don’t need a mayor who aided uncontrolled federal spending on things that appeal to so-call progressives, but which ignore the real challenges facing working Edmontonians.

Mike Nickel has been a thorn in the side of city council and city management. That makes me take him seriously. Who else has consistently raised issues about where we are spending civic tax dollars? He is aware of the social issues we face such as homelessness, but knows what we have been doing so far hasn’t worked. His approach is worth looking at. He has also asked why we have cut front line workers and added managers. No manager ever cleared your streets of snow or fixed your sidewalk. Bicycle lanes have also been something Nickel has railed against. I have no problem with bike lanes, but object to a lack of consultation and a true cost-benefit analysis.

LETTER: Slobodian has long history of uncovering the truth

Practically no one is reporting the truth anymore, but the Standard.

RE: SLOBODIAN: Beware the MSM Lies on Israeli-Palestine conflict

Thank you, Western Standard, for this timely article.

Practically no one is reporting the truth anymore, but the Standard. It is refreshing to read columns that push back on government-funded media outlets, especially the CBC. I remember Linda Slobodian from her Edmonton Sun days. She always uncovered the truth and made people think outside the box…..hmmm, with Slobodian, there is no box!!

Well done.
