LETTER: Motion blocking Farkas campaign is undemocratic

RE: Calgary council to debate motion than could see Farkas banned from campaigning in most of the city

The City of Calgary’s Integrity Commissioner & the Ethics Advisor should be looking into the legality of the motion to block a sitting council member from campaigning in a municipal election other then in his own ward. There is no good reason to block Jeromy Farkas from campaigning anywhere within the City of Calgary during the election campaign in October 2021.

I’ll put my ward member Councillor Sutherland on notice that I feel this is an undemocratic motion that goes against the best standards of our rights and freedoms commonly known as the Constitution of Canada.

Mayor Nenshi and city council is way out of line here. The committee voted 6-4 against the motion and I hope city council gets the hint. I’d say to Mayor Nenshi, a mayoral candidate needs to circulate around the city in a campaign. That even means going to events the others don’t want Mr. Farkas at. It’s called freedom of association Mayor Nenshi. The Ethics of this motion to give the Mayor, if he [Nenshi] should run, an unfair advantage is written all over this motion.

Mayor Nenshi has a very large opinion of himself. Mayor Nenshi & the Calgary City Administration have forgotten about the Code of Conduct & Core Values they force on the City of Calgary employees. Might be time for the City Manager & Council to go back and look at the Core Values before they vote on this motion.

From where I sit Mayor Nenshi this is mass bullying by a council, on a single councilor who wishes to run for the Mayor’s chair, giving the incumbent Mayor a distinct advantage.

The Cities Code of Conduct applies to City Council & especially the Mayor. Not just the employees Mayor Nenshi.

Good letter, i agree whole heartedly, Nenshi is trying to limit his opposition to the mayors chair. This guy needs to be taken down, he’s a disgrace to the city.

LETTER: AHS undercover agents’ practises raise lots of question

RE: AHS says deploying undercover agents ‘normal’ practice

Alberta Health Services Red Deer has been in correspondence with me on this issue.  They are not answering my specific questions around training, but they are suggesting that their actions are in alignment with the Alberta Health Act.

Seems strange to me that we do not know more about this secret branch of law enforcement, as they are able to operate within the province under their own set of rules that are private to them.

Maybe this has always been a thing, but they seem to be able to operate outside of the rules that bylaw officers are to follow.

No Media Bailouts

The fourth estate is critical to a functioning democracy in holding the government to account. An objective media can't maintain editorial integrity when it accepts money from a government we expect it to be critical of.

We the undersigned call on the Canadian government to immediately cease all payouts to media companies.
