LETTER: Support the WS, not the CBC

A reader says that taxpayers should be allowed to decide what media outlets their money supports.

RE: Western Standard responds to CBC legal threat: “No.”

What is written really makes sense, we see our American neighbours in the same boat with the Democrats – “either agree with us or shut up” .

I believe WS should find a way that all of us in the west can send some of our tax dollars to you.  I’d really like to see a tax system where taxpayers can designate where their tax dollars are spent.

Governments should not have the right to fund entities for favouritism.

TIME FOR CHANGE. And a free society with free voters can do it.

I’m subscribing.

LETTER: Minimum wage discussions are often multi-faceted

I would love to see the take-home pay issue receive far more media attention than it does, because it’s our take-home pay that pays the bills, not what we earn.

RE: A $15 hourly minimum wage actually costs student jobs

Thank you for your article on this perpetually divisive subject, and I appreciate the care you took to present a balanced view from both sides.

An adjunct to this discussion is earned pay vs take-home pay. The spread between the two has steadily increased over the past couple of decades, which is (in large part) why many request higher wages.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s often the government that gets the bigger proportionate raise than the employee, via payroll taxes.

When yearly increasing income tax, CPP, and EI amounts are deducted from the earned pay, any modest pay increase does little to improve a person’s actual paycheque.

From the employer’s perspective, they match CPP contributions 50/50, pay the higher proportion of EI deductions at 60/40, and pay 100% of the workers’ compensation premiums. And since these amounts are based on gross and not net pay, the hit to a company’s payroll budget directly impacts their financial ability to hire.

I would love to see the take-home pay issue receive far more media attention than it does, because it’s our take-home pay that pays the bills, not what we earn.

LETTER: John Carpay will be dearly missed

“Mr. Carpay’s actions may have been questionable in your eyes but they were not illegal.”

RE: Carpay steps aside as head of the JCCF

Reinstate John Carpay.

He is the heart and soul of the JCCF and has been an effective and tireless advocate for the freedoms of Canadians.

Don’t give in to the demands of the elite political hypocrites and bullies who demand his head for one minor slip up. Hypocrites who continue to cavalierly and unapologetically break every promise they make and who do NOT have the right to judge and condemn Mr. Carpay for his actions.

“He among you who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.”

Mr. Carpay’s actions may have been questionable in your eyes but they were not illegal. We are at war with our political system and our Rights and Freedoms are literally at stake.

I support Mr. Carpay’s actions and demand he be reinstated in his position at the JCCF. Do not give in to the woke and political bullies!!

Bring back John Carpay.

LETTER: Mavericks leaving some out of conservative umbrella

A party that, at its core, is supposed to be about providing a voice to the West, needs to embrace all Western ideals, including pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values.

RE: Maverick party releases its election platform

As a supporter of the Mavericks, I have been eagerly awaiting their platform. While their very broad and extensive economic platform is a breath of fresh air, their social policies are not.

A party that, at its core, is supposed to be about providing a voice to the West, needs to embrace all Western ideals, including pro-life values and pro-traditional marriage values.

One can argue the party should not take sides, but that defeats the purpose of being a voice for the West. However, the platform not only does not embrace social conservativism, but it actively bars social conservatives from expressing a voice, or introducing legislation to support traditional marriage or restrict abortion.

We don’t need another party telling the West what it should think or feel or believe, and we don’t need yet another top-down party. The Mavericks have not shown either the temerity or the confidence to embrace the values necessary for sustained electoral success.

I wanted to vote for them, but unless they permit MPs to have a voice in Ottawa, it’s a hard pass for me.

No Media Bailouts

The fourth estate is critical to a functioning democracy in holding the government to account. An objective media can't maintain editorial integrity when it accepts money from a government we expect it to be critical of.

We the undersigned call on the Canadian government to immediately cease all payouts to media companies.
